Smart switchable glass is glass whose light transmission ability can be altered when by passing electricity. It has been developed over the last few years and is now available on the market. The main difference between regular glass and smart switchable glass is that the latter are able to change their state from opaque to transparent or vice-versa depending upon the type of light source.

Types of Switchable Smart Glass

This glass looks like normal double-glazed unit but with an added extra layer of customization. When you look at the glass, you will notice there are two layers: one on top of the other. The bottom layer is usually made up of ordinary glass, while the top layer is made up of special material called electrochromic glass. When electricity is applied to the EC glass, it changes colour. In this case, the EC glass turns dark blue when electricity is applied and becomes transparent again when it’s removed.
Smart Film
Another way to make glass switchable is through PDLC (Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystals) films. How this works is that the liquid crystals are sandwiched between two thin polymer films. These films are placed on either side of the glass. When electricity is passed through these films, the molecules change shape and reflect the light differently. This is similar to how LCD screens work. The main benefit here is flexibility – PDLC smart glass films can bend and flex. This makes them ideal for curved surfaces.

Windows
This is probably the most obvious place where it could be used. If you want to privacy indoors from people outside, then you can use smart switchable glass.

Instead of using plain glass panels as shower screens you can smarten them for privacy.
